Virgin Mary statue beheaded at Long Island church
NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Hate crime investigators are looking for help finding the person who beheaded a religious statue at a Long Island church.
It happened to the Virgin Mary statue at the Church of Saint Gerard Majella on Terryville Road in Port Jefferson Station. Suffolk County police say the incident happened sometime between Friday and Sunday. The police are treating the incident as a hate crime. They are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
The incident happened about a week after vandals smashed the face of a life-size statue of Jesus outside the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in Manorville. The crimes have not been linked.
