'Meatless Mondays' expands to all NYC public schools

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - New York City's "Meatless Mondays" program will expand to all public schools.

"Cutting back on meat a little will improve New Yorkers' health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Mayor Bill de Blasio said. "We're expanding Meatless Mondays to all public schools to keep our lunch and planet green for generations to come."

De Blasio and Chancellor Richard Carranza announced that Monday's all-vegetarian breakfast and lunch menus, which was tested in 15 schools in Brooklyn in 2018, will go citywide in the fall.

School nutrition experts will get feedback from students before the menus are finalized.

"Meatless Mondays are good for our students, communities, and the environment," Carranza said. "Our 1.1 million students are taking the next step towards healthier, more sustainable lives."
