Troopers, pedestrians struck at crash scene
NEW JERSEY (FOX 5 NY) - A dump truck struck several pedestrians and New Jersey state troopers during an accident investigation on eastbound Route 280 in West Orange on Tuesday.
SkyFox was over the scene where the truck could be seen on its side. A gray minivan was lodged beneath a portion of the truck. An ambulance also appeared to have struck a fire truck.
A total of 12 trucks, including a food truck, appeared to have been involved. It was not clear how many vehicles were part of the initial crash investigation.
State Police tweeted that three troopers were outside their patrol cars near mile post 9.8 when they struck at about 10:22 a.m.
"Two troopers sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries," State Police said in a tweet. "The other trooper sustained minor injuries."
The conditions of the pedestrians were unclear, but they did not suffer serious injuries, police said.
A fire erupted at the scene as well.
It was not clear why the dump truck struck the police and pedestrians.
Acting Gov. Sheila Oliver commented on the crash.
"While this is an ongoing investigation, it should remind us all of the dangers our first responders can encounter while performing their jobs on our roadways," Oliver said. "We wish all of those injured a speedy recovery. We will continue to pray for them all."
Oliver was serving as acting governor while Gov. Phil Murphy was on vacation.
Eastbound Route 280 remained closed through the crash zone.
