Woman found hacked to death in Brooklyn apartment

One woman was found hacked to death and another hospitalized after a brutal ax attack in a Brooklyn public housing project.  A 4-year-old girl was also found in the apartment but was unharmed.

Police responded to the Bushwick Houses on Flushing Ave. about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.

NYPD officers say a 21-year-old woman was taken by EMS to Elmhurst Hospital with lacerations to her head and body. She was listed in critical condition.

Inside the apartment, officers found the body of 20-year-old Savanah Rivera in the living room with multiple stab wounds and lacerations to both the head and body.  Police say her head was nearly decapitated.

Additionally, a 4-year-old girl, who is the child of the 21-year-old victim, was found unharmed inside a bedroom in the apartment. EMS took her to Woodhull Hospital for evaluation and observation.

The child was unharmed in another room.

Officers are investigating whether an ax found in the building's trash compactor may have been the murder weapon.

Early Sunday police announced the arrest of 34-year-old Jerry Brown of Flushing Ave. in Brooklyn.  He was facing murder charges.  It was unclear if he had a lawyer.
